Friends of FANA DC
Friends of FANA DC is a network of families with children of all ages adopted from Colombia, most from an orphanage called FANA located in Bogotá, Colombia. Although our group is based in the Washington DC area, we welcome participation from families across the US who seek a connection to the birthplace of their children – Colombia.
What We Do
The Fundacion para la Asistencia de la Niñez Abandonada (FANA) has served the children and young women of Colombia for almost 35 years. Through FANA, thousands of children have found loving, permanent homes. Many other children have received temporary care including nutrition and shelter, clothing, medical and dental care, and schooling before returning to their birth families.
Young women in need of assistance are welcomed at the Hogar Marguerite, affiliated with FANA, and are offered counseling, vocational training, medical care, as well as basic necessities. FANA is supported by a dedicated staff and strong worldwide network of families and friends who help support its efforts.

Friends of FANA DC is a network of families with children of all ages adopted from Colombia. We are located in the Washington, DC area and most of our activities take place locally. However, we welcome participation from families across the United States who seek a connection to the birthplace of their children – Colombia. That connection may be through cultural and educational events, through supporting orphanages in Colombia, or through sharing experiences with other families and adoptees.
Friends of FANA DC was founded by adoptive parents to provide educational and cultural opportunities for our children who were born in Colombia and to provide support to orphanages in Colombia. We seek to enhance the lives of our children by providing educational, cultural, and social activities that foster our children’s understanding of Colombia. We also want to reach out to other children and young adults who are from Colombia, but who may not have a way to connect to the heritage of their birthplace. We actively seek educational opportunities for all Colombian-American children and offer a variety of events in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for children and their families. For more information, see Local Cultural Events.
While providing for Colombian-American children’s needs, we also are committed to supporting needy children in Colombia at orphanages such as FANA—Fundacion para la Asistencia de la Niñez Abandonada – the orphanage in Bogotá where many of our children lived before joining our families. We feel a responsibility to help those children and young women still in need in Colombia and the orphanages that continue to support them. We have an active relationship with FANA in Bogotá providing funds as well as donations of supplies. We also help support a shelter for young women seeking a safe haven during their pregnancy. For more information, see What is FANA.
Get in Touch. Get Involved.
While we are an all-volunteer organization, we still need funds to develop and run programs for our members and also to help in Colombia. We welcome additional donations toward our operating costs.
Your donation can make a big difference!
