Local Colombia Culture

The Washington DC area is host to a number of people of Colombian heritage, due in part to the presence of the Colombian Embassy and Consulate. Additionally, a number of Colombian-born persons work at international organizations located here (Organization of American States, Inter-American Development Bank, The World Bank, etc). The increasing influence of the Hispanic/Latino community as a whole on life in the Washington area offers additional opportunities for participation in activities reflecting the Hispanic/Latino culture.

Each year, September 15 – October 15 is designated “Hispanic Heritage Month,” and many local cultural and educational organizations as well as local governments sponsor Hispanic Heritage celebrations. A number of local jurisdictions, including Arlington County and Montgomery County, have staged county heritage festivals which occasionally highlight the country of Colombia. Check with the county websites for more information.
